I have noted it down in the VMWare specific notes.

 The grub image look for /boot/gnumach but the actual image is
/boot/gnumach.gz so modify the grub  menu in the fisrt step and  link
/boot/gnumach.gz to /boot/gnumach  (or even you can edit the grub menu
itself permanently, I have not done it, if you do it that way add a note in
the wiki how to do it).
