Hello,
As it will be necessary to convert a lot of data
from old 8-bit fonts to Unicode, I have been playing
around with how to do this conversion. The easiest
way that I found is by using uniconv, a program that
comes with yudit. uniconv uses keymaps similar to the
yudit data entry keymaps. A first version of a
conversion keymap from OR_TTSarala to Unicode is
available under the "Conversion maps" section of
http://oriya.sarovar.org/keymaps.html, which also
has instructions on how to install these, and how to
use them under Linux (a similar command will also
work in a MS-DOS window if you have yudit installed
under Windows).
This should be considered a beta version, i.e., be
careful about depending on it for important data.
Even though it is largely complete, there were a
few glyphs that I am unsure about (see comments in
the OR_TTSarala.kmap file). You will need to have
yudit installed (for uniconv), as well as a Unicode
Oriya font (also available from the download page of
the http://oriya.sarovar.org website). Please let me
know of any problems, or if you successfully convert
a large document.
Conversion maps for other fonts are also possible,
but as it involves a rather painstaking process of
manually identifying each glyph in the font, and
looking up the Unicode counterparts, I would rather
develop a GUI tool that generates such maps, and
harness the efforts of people here. You may, however,
contact me if you have a pressing need for conversion
of a particular font.
Regards,
Gora
