This subject came up briefly at the last localizers
meet, but I think that it is important enough that
we should discuss it at length. I think that it would
be a great selling point, if we could agree on a
minimal set of software that all teams would localize
into their respective languages, so that we get a
common interface across all languages. I think that
this will be useful, if not required, for support
purposes. Also, the software should be lightweight,
and run smoothly on the AMD PIC. To my mind, that
means no GNOME or KDE. To your list above, I would
add:
# A simple Unicode editor with printing support
(yudit?), but maybe the Abiword wordprocessor
covers that.
# Is Gaim really necessary?
Also, last I looked at it, Evolution was buggy, but
as it is closer to Microsoft products we should give
it a try. I am also assuming that the base Linux
system with gcc is also there, so that the user can
choose to extend her system, should she choose to.
Likewise, modem dialers, maybe VOIP, etc. As it has a
compact flash socket and USB, digital camera support
and image manipulation software (gimp) could be
included. An interesting article that I came across
which discusses software for a Linux desktop is at
http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT3135712364.html
though it is probably aimed at a more high-end
machine.
So, what are people's thoughts on this?
Regards,
Gora
