Two interesting Free Software Projects for Windows users.
1. Cooperative Linux
http://www.colinux.org/
What is coLinux *... "If Linux <http://www.colinux.org/?section=home#> runs
on every architecture, why should another operating
system<http://www.colinux.org/?section=home#>be in its way? " ...
* *Cooperative Linux* is the first working *free* and *open
source<http://www.colinux.org/?section=home#>
* method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft
Windows<http://www.colinux.org/?section=home#>natively. More
generally,
*Cooperative Linux* (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux
kernel<http://www.kernel.org/>that allows it to run cooperatively
alongside another operating system on a
single machine. For instance, it allows one to *freely* run Linux on Windows
2000/XP, *without* using a commercial PC virtualization software such as
VMware <http://www.vmware.com/>, in a way which is much more optimal than
using any general purpose PC virtualization
software<http://www.colinux.org/?section=home#>.
2. ReactOS
http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/index.html
The ReactOS <http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/about.html>(r) project is
dedicated to making Free
Software<http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/license.html>available to
everyone by providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft
Windows(r) XP compatible operating
system<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system>.
ReactOS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications
and device drivers
<http://www.reactos.org/support/?page=tree&db=compdb>meant for NT and
XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and
providing a complete and equivalent public interface.
Although Free Software advocates agree that free software operating systems
improve the state of the art by fostering competition, ReactOS has practical
benefit for others, too; ReactOS is the most complete working model of a
Windows(r) like operating system available. Consequently, working programmers
will learn a great deal by studying ReactOS source
code<http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/download.html>and even
participating in ReactOS
development <http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/dev.html>.
